A little about Nathan:

Nathan Watson
Nathan Watson

Nathan has a passion for bird photography and his creative use of light and other techniques captures artistic images that showcase the beauty of his subjects.

His home on the south coast of Western Australia is rich with flora and fauna and bucket-list species, but it’s the more common bird species that have given Nathan some of his most creative shots.

Those shots have won Nathan multiple awards in the BirdLife Australia Photography Awards, as well as being shortlisted in the international Wild Art Nature Photographer of the Year in 2022 and commended in 2023, finalist in the 2023 Bird Photographer of the Year, and a finalist in the 2023 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.

In his talk, Nathan will share some of his award-winning work and other images, talk about his approach to capturing those images, and the different lighting scenarios you can look for in the field to take your own wall hangars.

Nathan’s talk at Hahndorf will be on light:

Photography is an artform and light is the essence of art in photography. But capturing images that have a more artistic quality requires an understanding of light and what you can do with it. Combined with other techniques, it will open up a whole new world of creativity and fun in your photography. In this presentation Nathan will share some his award-winning photos and talk about how he approached them, describing the different lighting scenarios and what to look for in the field to achieve different lighting effects in your photos. He will also cover the importance of quality light, taking images in low light, and how conditions influence light and should influence your ventures into the field to get the best results.
